About Mimi Slawoff
I’m a Los Angeles-based freelance travel journalist who has been traveling since childhood when my family would visit relatives in Europe. That got me hooked on travel.
My career began as a reporter for the Los Angeles Daily News. But after I became a mom, I wanted more flexible hours and I started writing for parenting publications, including L.A. Parent magazine, and Disney’s Family Fun. It was then I started writing about family travel. It was a perfect fit for me, combining my love of travel, writing, and photography. My three children have been traveling with me since they were babies.
We’ve taken cruises, skied in Europe, stayed at numerous Club Med resorts, rode horses at guest ranches, and so much more.
My kids are now grown, and while we still travel together, I often travel with a friend or on press trips – sometimes solo, and sometimes in a group.
My primary areas of interest are river/ocean cruises, snow skiing, snorkeling, outdoor adventures, history and culture.
Recently, I’ve added river boat cruising in Europe to my list of travels. On an 11-night cruise on the Seine River, my son, Michael, and I rode e-bikes to Monet’s Garden and visited several historic sites where we learned more about the French and their role in WWI and WWII. My older daughter, Christina, and I cruise often in Europe.
As journalism changes over the years, I learn to adapt to different formats and styles. It’s one of the many things I enjoy about my career. I contribute to AAA, USA TODAY 10Best, Travel+Leisure.com, L.A. Parent magazine, and many other print and digital outlets. I’m also the copy editor for North Peoria Lifestyle magazine. In addition, I’m the author of Oldest Los Angeles (Reedy Press, 2022), and Historic Los Angeles Roadsides (Reedy Press, 2025).
